The First Cut Is The Deepest

I've been wanting to blog this entry for days; but the words just wouldn't come out... which lead me to blog an almost too truthful entry prior to this. I didn't mean to be too tactless or anything. Ignore it or have it in your face if ya want to... but I still care. Really.

Anyways.

This entry is dedicated to national day.

Yupp. What can I say? I'm a patriotic lil' bitch.

I wanna talk about Vanda Miss Joaquim. Yes, our national flower since 1981. It was chosen as our national flower due to its hardiness and its ability to bloom all year round which represents our country's progress and achievement for excellence (i did some research). We are also the only nation to choose a hybrid as our national flower, which also somehow represents the different races that made up our nation (ok I made this crap up, since a hybrid is an offspring produced by different varities or races of plants and animals, I thought our country being multi-racial might mean the same thing haha).

This leads to my point of the Vanda Miss Joaquim belonging to a species of the orchid.

Orchids are among the most diverse of the flowering plant family. They have like over 20,000 species, and probably another 60,000 other kinds of hybrids, which includes our Vanda Miss Joaquim.

The purpose of this entry is to find out how orchids derived their names from. Orchids actually got their name from the Greek word orchis, which means 'testicle'. Why were they named after a testicle? This is due to some species of orchids having the appearance of some part called pseudobulbs, which looks like, you guessed it... testicles.

So really, the Orchid Cancer Appeal is an organisation dedicated to funding research into diagnosis, prevention and treatment of prostate and testicular cancer, and actually has nothing to do with flowers. And that the condition Cryptorchidism, I was wondering why it has the word "orchid" within it, well... now I know. Orchid = Testicle. In a way. Literally.

One learns new things everyday.

Happy national day.
